Per l’Italia!  More of our story!

This is one of the great gifts from Italy to the children of the world. Carlo Collodi’s 1883 masterpiece, The Adventures of Pinocchio, is the story of the wooden marionette who desperately wants to be a real boy. His adventures are full of mischief, wonder, sadness, joy, treachery, danger and all the exuberant life of a real Italian boy. This is the English translation by Carol Della Chiesa.

Audio Podcast Novel: Robinson Crusoe (Part 14)

DOWNLOAD ROBINSON CRUSOE – PART 14

Crusoe builds his friendship with Friday, teaching him English, Christianity, hunting with a gun, and working with tools. The two men develop a deep and trusting bond once Crusoe gets over his struggles with suspicion and doubts about Friday’s intentions. We find ourselves at that part of the novel that best illustrates what many critics of Defoe’s novel say is a glorification of English colonialism and empire. To be sure, that is part of what is going on in the book. However, there is more to it than that. Defoe, at times, seems close to sowing seeds of doubt about the English world he lived in and its beliefs about its place in the world. Pay very close attention to the conversations between Friday and Crusoe. They move in directions entirely unanticipated by Crusoe. He is constantly surprised by how loyal, intelligent, and civilized Friday turns out to be in his very deepest nature.

Shakespeare Animated: Macbeth

Art: Don’t Turn Back

Don’t Turn Back

This is my next large canvas print.  I’ve been making original artist prints through a gallery in Los Angeles. They measure 68″ x 38″. They are original works created from images used in my film Yellow Plastic Raygun.  They are not exact frames from the film, but rather artworks based on segments of the film.

A Barefoot Reader of Ulysses

That’s Marilyn Monroe reading James Joyce’s Ulysses.  That look on her face – a mix of befuddled interest and confused determination – is exactly how I read Ulysses.  Monroe apparently kept a copy of the book in her car and stuck with the damn thing for a long time.  You’ve got to wonder about this woman.  She probably should have stayed far away from Kennedy and stuck a little closer to the things she really liked.

Strangely enough, it happens to be June 16th which is worldwide Bloomsday, when Ulysses is celebrated with public readings.

Cannibals come to Crusoe’s island and make him believe there is a possibility of confrontation. But in this section of the book Crusoe meets his companion, Friday. He considers this man to be his servant and slave. An odd assumption since it is actually he, Robinson Crusoe, who is the intruder in Friday’s part of the world. This must have something to do with the way certain nations operated in those days and, in some cases, still do.

At any rate, Crusoe begins to teach Friday English and becomes more assured of their friendship.

11-Year-Old Raises Money For Gulf Birds With Art

This is a nice kid. She’s Olivia Bouler and she’s an artist with a great love for birds. She is offering her art for sale to help the birds in the BP Gulf Oil Disaster. The money goes to organizations that can help out like the National Audubon Society.

Here’s a Facebook page that Olivia’s parents set up for the project.

Khan Academy Teaches Math and Science on YouTube

Salman Khan teaches math and science via YouTube video lessons.  It’s called Khan Academy.  He teaches a wide variety of subjects including algebra, calculus, biology, physics, chemistry and statistics.  He thinks everyone should be able to get an education for free and he does not think universities are doing it properly.  The education model needs to be rethought and rebuilt.  Many people think so and that’s why Kahn Academy has so many students and is attracting venture capital money.  He’s getting more viewers than most university web sites.  Here’s a PBS NewsHour piece about him:

Here’s a lesson on adding and subtracting fractions:

Surgeons Offer a BP Oil Spill Plug Idea Based on Blood Vessel Plugs

A pair of surgeons who specialize in stopping uncontrolled bleeding from blood vessels have offered their solution for plugging the Gulf oil leak. It uses basic technology that shuts off high pressure leaks inside the human body.

Watch the film below, then watch the idea I presented on May 27th below that. The two ideas are very close and share a heavy top weight concept connecting to an extending narrow pipe. The surgeons have added the concept of tapering the extending pipe. Fascinating. I think that the real solution to plugging the oil gusher will be something very close to these ideas.

The idea from the surgeons:

Animation: The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch

This is a film made in a workshop run by Quirky Pictures for the BBC Children in Need at the Downsview Special School in the U.K. It’s just insanely beautiful. These kids are learning to be free with various artistic modes and they have made something that is mysterious, magical and wonderful. They are 9 – 12 years old and they make all their paper cutouts, puppets, and props. They storyboard and watercolor and narrate. They have their own little movie studio going into operation. These workshops must be something to see because these results are something very rare. I think the BBC should put together a television show and get all these things on the air.
