This is a learning game I programmed quite a few years ago. I’ve rewritten the code so that it should play more smoothly and perhaps be a little easier to read in the test results area.
The game is very simple: Larry Lobster tells you what to do. You just click on the letter bubbles to pick the right ones. A perfect score frees the trapped submarine from the bottom of the ocean.

This is the 2011 Oscar winning short animation, ‘The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore.’ It’s the first film from Moonbot Studios in Shreveport, Louisiana. It was co-directed by William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg
The film is also an iPad app that combines animation with an interactive picture book narrative.
Richard Brautigan was one of America’s best poets. Here he is reading poems from his collection called The Pill Versus the Springhill Mine Disaster.

Well, I think I’ve just been punched in the mouth. Wouldn’t have it any other way. I keep looking for mean mad poets. This guy’s one I think. He’s doing his Beatles impersonation on a frozen roof in Philadelphia and he’s wearing purple. He seems to be someone who could knock me down and I’d know I’d been treated gently. This guy’s poetry sounds wicked and mad and full of love at the same time. It’s the kind of thing I’d read over and over again. His poetry is like something he’d say in a room without thinking much about it. I love the thing about Poe and his bones and Frank answering in a different voice at the 10:50 mark. Ha ha! Love that. That’s what it’s all about isn’t it? Saying it back as if you’re the guy. It’s how you travel in time and make magic happen. It’s the hidden art. I know a lot about that poem. So, okay, there’s a poet in Philadelphia who’s not afraid of the snow and keeps a fur hat on top of his head. I’ll be looking for this guy and reading his books. He’s CAConrad. He reads the entire book out loud to a group of kids at the White House Easter Egg Roll. Watch him. He wings it. He improvises. He throws himself completely into what he is doing for these kids. He knows they can’t all see the pictures so he describes and even performs them. I know just how difficult this performance really is. There are few people who can pull this off. We have a president who is actually an intelligent person and who enjoys reading and talking to people. I think this is a very good video for Children’s Book Week.
It’s Children’s Book Week from May 11 – 17, 2009. It covers everything from picture books for very young readers to teen fiction. As part of the celebration, the Children’s Book Council is going to list the Children’s Choice Book Awards on May 13. The award is given to books selected by children as their favorites of the year. You can print out the official Children’s Book Week bookmark.
This event has been celebrated since 1919 in schools, libraries, and bookstores. You can celebrate at home by reading to young children each day of the week, buying your kids some wonderful new books, printing out posters for their walls, encouraging them to enter online writing contests, and just letting them know that time spent reading is worth much more than time spent watching television.
