Alma: Short Horror Animation by Rodrigo Blaas
Let’s begin the creepy festivities of October with this short film by Pixar’s Rodrigo Blaas.
Light Up: Animation by Aveline Stoquart and David Duvieusart
‘Light Up’ is a short animation by Aveline Stoquart and David Duvieusart. Students at the Haute École Albert Jacquard in Namur, Belgium also worked on the film. A girl who is into astronomy lives in a totally starless world. One evening she sees something new and gets into her little flying machine to investigate. I love the scene in the little plane. It’s a very simple charming little story, gently told and well-animated.
Short Animation: Fallen Art
This a 2004 animation directed by Tomek Baginski. Soldiers are pushed to their deaths and photographed. You know, kind of like the way it all works in the real world.
Madagascar, A Journey Diary
Filled with different art styles, as if an artist went on a trip and tried new things with each page in a sketch book. This film, directed by Bastien Dubois, was nominated for a 2010 Academy Award.
The Last City on Earth – Brilliant Sci-Fi Animation by Ricardo Mercado
Ricardo Mercado made this fantastic machinima-like science fiction film about a city in a perpetual state of war and an outsider who has a message to deliver. It’s wild and beautiful and really feels like science fiction!
Animation: Skhizein
Jérémy Clapin made Skhizein, a CG animation in which a man finds himself standing about a foot to the side of his actual position in the world. My question is: if he’s standing off to the side of himself, wouldn’t he be seeing everything from the point of view of his actual self since he touches things from that point of view?
Film: World Builder
Here’s a beautiful science fiction film from Bruce Branit, about a man who builds a world for the woman he loves. If you’ve ever made anything in a 3D program, you know exactly what this film is up to.
Animation: The Forest
David Scharf made this lovely animated film called The Forest. A young girl uses her imagination in a world that doesn’t fit her well. She resists being drawn into the ordinary life she sees around her for as long as she can.
The animation is beautiful and the film has a dark, smokey look. It’s a story told simply and with a delicate touch.
I found this via my favorite film site, No fat clips!!!
Animation: Red Rabbit
Egmont Mayer of Germany made this 3D animated film. A man lives with his secret rabbit and cuts his social interactions to nearly nothing as a result of his shame. I like the way animators are starting to revel in making their films look like they are rendered in 3D software rather than trying to defeat the software to make things look realistic.
3D Animation: The Giant and the Tailor
Travel into unknown lands with the adventurous tailor who
meets a giant. This animation is a fairy tale classic from the Brothers Grimm.
