\"Planisphere\"Poet John Ashbery<\/em><\/a> has published a new book of poems called Planisphere<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 Boy, I hated this guy’s poems a few years ago.\u00a0 But I kept reading them because of some instinct for self-inflicted mental damage.\u00a0 And I kept reading him.\u00a0 Not understanding him at all.\u00a0 But I liked the words as they passed me by.\u00a0 They sort of slide on by you.\u00a0 Smooth, but switching and becoming something totally unexpected, unrelated to what just happened before.\u00a0 His poems sort of shimmer and seem a bit brittle, like glass.\u00a0 When you read this guy you certainly know that you are not reading someone else.\u00a0 He’s in his eighties, but his work seems like a young man’s.\u00a0 He has a gently rebellious foolishness that I greatly admire.<\/p>\n

His publisher, Harper Collins, has a preview of his new book<\/a> that offers quite a few of the poems.<\/p>\n

So does this sound like the writing of an eighty-year-old?<\/p>\n

I dream of married couples having sex, shopping, everything,
\nand often get the giggles, staying here,
\nexpecting something new to come along every five seconds.
\nThat’s new to me, I expect others will have heard about it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
