\"bukowski\"The Rumpus<\/em> has a piece<\/a> that Charles Bukowski<\/em><\/a> wrote as a forward to a book of poems by William Wantling<\/em><\/a> in 1974.\u00a0 He writes about meeting the other poet for the first time and liking him.\u00a0 It must have been a big thing to be liked by Bukowski because he seems to have a problem with most people.\u00a0 His piece is touching and shows how sensitive Bukowski really was to the unspoken things.<\/p>\n

He writes a bit about style and says:<\/p>\n

Style means no shield at all.
\nStyle means no front at all.
\nStyle means ultimate naturalness.
\nStyle means one man alone with billions of men about.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Is that really it?\u00a0 Boy, Bukowski would have hated me to the ends of his toes because I’m always arguing my point.\u00a0 The problem I have with what he’s saying there is that he made a living by writing with the biggest shield of all in front of him.\u00a0 A bottle.\u00a0 It’s the best shield there is.\u00a0 Bullet-proof.\u00a0 So he must be wrong about style.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
